The Fifth Grade Experience

Fifth grade continues the academically rigorous program of the earlier grades even as it addresses the developmental challenges of young adolescents. A literature-rich language arts program takes the students through several novels, while also addressing grammar and vocabulary. Writing skills are emphasized, and students use process writing to complete a number of writing assignments and oral presentations. In mathematics, arithmetic and geometry skills are reviewed and extended. In science, students design experiments with controlled variables, test hypotheses and report on their findings, gather data and predict the weather. In geography, students make an edible map of the counties of Maryland on Maryland Cake Day; in history, they recreate Native American villages and compete in the King James shipbuilding contest.

A Transition Year

In many ways, fifth grade is a transition year for students, as they prepare for Middle School and the greater independence and responsibility it entails.

Growing Responsibility

Personal study and organizational skills and habits of diligence and self-control take on added importance, as students hone the behaviors and the skills necessary for success at the next level of their education. Students also take more responsibility for their spiritual growth: they lead class devotions, have prayer partners, and develop the habit of a daily quiet time with God.

Growing Leadership

The students become more aware of how their behavior affects others, and is a time when leadership skills are more intentionally addressed, whether through participation in the safety patrol program or through the Fifth Grade Buddies program, which pairs fifth grade students with first grade students in a mentoring relationship. Undergirding the entire fifth grade program is the study of God’s Word, focusing on the life of Christ and the history of the early church in the book of Acts.
