The Third Grade Experience

Built around the theme of “Sailing,” third grade takes the students on a year long adventure in learning. Students learn to navigate through the world of knowledge by studying spatial sense and the use of globes, maps, and geographic tools. They travel across the world, following the Vikings on their quests, tracking Native Americans as they migrate, and meeting Colonists as they settle into a new world. They venture back in time to Ancient Rome and take an inland journey where they explore the great river systems of the world. They voyage into the imaginative and creative worlds of myth, poetry, and stories where they will acquire skills in reading, writing, and oral communication. Third grade adventurers will travel inside the human body as they study anatomy, and they will reach the stars as they learn astronomy. Along the way they will be enriched by music and art, and the Bible will be their companion at every phase of the trip.

Taking Advantage of the Washington-Baltimore Area

The intellectual stops on this voyage are enriched by the vast resources of the greater Washington-Baltimore area. Trips to the Walters Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the National Air and Space Museum, the Planetarium, and the Inner Harbor are a few of the expeditions on which third graders go. A Roman Festival, a Julius Caesar production, a Poetry, Popcorn, Pillow, and Parent Party, and a Noah’s Ark play, are some of the special events that add spice and fun to the learning adventure. Any successful voyage has certain things. Third grade crew members work and prosper in a physically and emotionally safe shipboard environment. Parents of crew members are welcome on board and provide essential support for the journey. Clear and frequent communication from ship to home helps to ensure that all on board reach their destination.
