The WCA Society

The highest governing authority over Washington Christian Academy is the Washington Christian School Society. The Society elects the Board of Directors and adopts the annual budget in triannual meetings. Any Christian who subscribes to the Reformed confessions and to the inerrancy of Scripture is eligible to join the Society and have a voice in the government of WCA.

Schools like WCA were originally parochial, or governed by their churches. In 1892, under the leadership of Rev. Klaus Kuiper in western Michigan, Reformed Christian schools began to opt for government by a society of church members who were especially interested in the welfare of the schools. Society governance allowed the schools to advance their missions independently, rather than in tandem with the vicissitudes of a particular congregation. At the same time, society governance provided a more stable and far-sighted vision than a simple parent-run form of governance because, in addition to parents, school societies typically enfolded many older Christians who saw the future of the church in its covenant children.

WCA, being founded by three churches and serving many more, has always been Society governed and welcomes new members and the wisdom they bring.
